I don’t usually do posts about books received in a week, but since I scored very nicely this weekend at a library book sale, I thought I’d show my spoils. Greenburgh Library hosted an annual book sale with paperbacks for 50 cents, trade paperbacks for $1, and hardcovers for $2.
Although I already read Song of Scarabaeus, I bought another copy. I felt like I needed to “save” it.. I held myself back from also saving a copy of Tithe by Holly Black and War for the Oaks by Emma Bull. Also bought: Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer, Rampant by Diana Peterfreund, The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks by E. Lockhart, Santa Olivia by Jacqueline Carey (I may already own this book.. TBR is getting to that point), A Kiss in Time by Alex Flinn, Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork, and Midwinter by Matthew Sturges. Total for this pile = $9, all bought on Saturday.
I may have gone to the White Plains Library on Sunday and checked out their book sale area and bought these three for a dollar. Warlord’s Daughter by Susan Grant is SFR. I will check it out. Kiss of Death and Fade Out by Rachel Caine are from the Morganville Vampire series that I need to catch up on. Usually quick reads, although I’m beginning to wonder when this series is ever (?) going to end.
Then I MAY have gone BACK to the Greenburgh library sale. And they had a buy 4 paperbacks, get 5th free deal on Sunday, so I just HAD to get 5.. for $2. And one TPB for $1. Mercy Blade by Faith Hunter (I’m wary because I got tired of her Rogue Mage series after book 2, but I hear her UF is very different and good), Irreversible by Liz Maverick (mostly because I just want to get to all the Shomi books one day, this is the sequel to Wired which I’ve already read), Crocodile on the Sandbank and The Curse of the Pharaohs, by Elizabeth Peters (recommended by the Book Smugglers. Wish the books indicated what the book order was), To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis (recommended by calico_reaction), and A Certain Slant of Light by Laura Whitcomb (recommended by everybody).
So in total, 17 books for $13. Not bad!
By the way, do people know about BookSaleFinder.com? It’s this website (US & Canada only I’m afraid) where you can look up whether there are any book sales in your area. I am signed up with their Sale Mail which emails me once a week about sales near my zip code. Usually I do not go, but it’s nice to know I could. You know.. in case the TBR mountain range needs more friends.

Ahhh, truth. I’m always 2/3 giddy, 1/3 guilty when I buy new books because of the dreaded TBR pile, haha.

I know, I was sort of pleasantly surprised how the sale had a bunch of books I’d wanted to read. But yes, bad library, making me buy more books.
I totally know that feeling, when you see a book you want but you’re not sure if you already have it… 🙂
I really liked Santa Monica and To Say Nothing of the Dog – I want to read Three Men in a boat by Jerome K. Jerome (the subtitle is “To Say Nothing of the Dog” – the three men and the dog in the boat actually make a guest appearance in Willis’ book, which is so cute!).
I have to catch up on Rachel Caine’s series too, I’ve only read the first one so far but I did like it. Nice blend of horror and urban fantasy and the plot and characters really engaged me.
I never know when the libraries around here have sales. They usually have a few books for sale but never anything I want.
Good to hear that you recommend a couple in that pile. I’ll probably get to TO SAY NOTHING OF THE DOG before some of the others.

I love library sales! It looks like you came away with a great haul. I really liked Life As We Knew It, Marcelo in the Real World was pretty good, and I’ve been wanting to read more stuff by Flinn after reading Beastly. Enjoy all your new books!

Excellent haul. I adore Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody books – the early books are fun, and then they get REALLY good.
And… you just have so many other books I want to read!

Ah well, if you went to the Greenburgh sale I’m sure you got a few good ones for yourself! The selection was good, even though I went there later in the day (I think I got there around 2 or 3pm).

I guess I am pretty spoiled, I’m used to paying $1 in the White Plains sale area. But $2 is still very good. If you are ever in the states – these library book sales have the best deals. There is one in Greenwich, CT where you can fill a bag for $5 (if I recall the price correctly). When I went to that one, it was MADNESS.

You got so many books! Library book sales are awesome. I got to check out a couple of them in 2009. I’ll be waiting to see what you think of A Certain Slant of Light (which I really enjoyed) and To Say Nothing of the Dog (which I’m planning to read soon). I think Crocodile on the Sandbank is the first book in the series, I’ve been trying to look for that in bargain bookstores.
I know, they are the best. Oh good, two votes for A CERTAIN SLANT OF LIGHT so far. I may read that one sooner than the rest, although I’m also kind of eying SANTA OLIVIA since that one also got a lot of love. I recognized the CROCODILE IN THE SANDBANK title, but I wasn’t sure about where THE CURSE OF THE PHARAOHS fitted in. Google says it’s the second.. I hope so!
